There are some shoots where you only get one chance to capture the moment, and a surprise proposal is definitely one of them.
Tristan had planned to propose to Maddy with the ocean behind them, and everything came together perfectly. My job was to be in position, stay unnoticed, and be ready when the moment happened.
Then Tristan dropped to one knee.
Maddy’s reaction said it all, and most importantly, she said yes!
For a proposal like this, I want the photography to feel natural and unobtrusive. The first priority is documenting the actual moment as it happens. There is no reset button, so I am watching the light, the background, and the couple while also making sure I am far enough away that I do not give away the surprise.
Once the proposal was official and everyone had a chance to take it in, we slowed things down and turned the rest of the evening into a relaxed couples session.
We wandered through Beacon Hill Park, taking advantage of the warm evening light, tall grasses, stone walls, gardens, and a few quiet spots along the way. After the excitement of the proposal, Tristan and Maddy were able to relax, enjoy the moment, and simply be together. Those are often some of my favourite photographs from sessions like this because nothing feels forced.
We also made sure to get a few photographs of the ring, of course.
Their evening continued with a carriage ride followed by dinner, which was a pretty perfect way to celebrate an engagement.
A selection of images from the session is included below.
If you are planning a surprise proposal in Victoria or would like to create a relaxed couples session around a special occasion, feel free to get in touch. I am always happy to help with timing, location ideas, and a plan that keeps the photography natural while making sure the important moments are covered.
