Not every studio shoot needs a traditional studio.
For Emilee’s birthday session, we set everything up in my garage so we could have a little more freedom to play around with candles, cupcakes, and a few ideas that were probably going to get messy. That turned out to be a good call.
The idea for the shoot was simple: create something fun, stylish, and a little playful to celebrate her birthday. We kept the setup clean with a simple backdrop and focused on expression, movement, and personality. The sunglasses and cupcakes gave us just enough to work with without making the images feel overly staged.
One thing I always enjoy about shoots like this is letting the session develop naturally. We start with an idea, get the solid shots, and then see where things go. Sometimes the unplanned moments end up being the most memorable.
Emilee also wanted to try a TikTok trend involving putting flour in your mouth and blowing it over a cupcake with a lit candle. In theory, it was supposed to create a dramatic cloud of flour.
In reality?
Epic fail.
It didn’t quite work the way TikTok promised, but it definitely gave us a laugh and made the shoot even more memorable. Sometimes that is part of the fun. Not every experiment has to produce the perfect photo to be worth trying.
Birthday sessions like this are a great excuse to do something different. They can be polished, funny, glamorous, creative, or a mix of everything. You do not need a complicated concept either. A few simple props, a good idea, and a willingness to play around can go a long way.
This type of studio session works well for models, actors, creatives, or anyone who wants updated photos that feel a little more personal than a standard portrait session.
