Halloween Studio Photography in Victoria, BC | Timothy West Photography
Halloween is one of those times of year when creativity really gets to run wild, and this year I decided to have a little fun in the studio!
The concept was simple: one bold red backdrop, dramatic lighting, and five amazing models bringing their own interpretation of Halloween to life.
Syd, Elaine, Jaycine, Emily, and Lina each arrived with their own outfits, ideas, and personalities. What followed was a fantastic evening of gothic fashion, dramatic poses, a few sinister-looking props, plenty of laughter, and even a giant carnivorous plant!
As a photographer, I love shoots like these. There’s no pressure to create a particular look for a client or follow a rigid shot list. Instead, it’s about collaborating, experimenting, and seeing what we can create together.
And these five certainly didn’t disappoint!
Syd: A Little Dark, a Little Dangerous
Syd kicked off our Halloween shoot with a wonderfully dark and edgy look.
Dressed in black, complete with spiderweb gloves, dramatic makeup, and some wicked accessories, she brought plenty of attitude to the studio.
One of my favourite shots features Syd holding a knife prop against the deep red background, giving us a wonderfully sinister expression. We also experimented with some crouching poses that really showcased her outfit and styling.
What a great way to start the evening!
Elaine: Gothic Elegance with an Edge
Next up was Elaine, who brought a lovely combination of gothic elegance and Halloween attitude.
Her black outfit, lace gloves, dramatic makeup, and flower-trimmed hat worked beautifully against the red backdrop.
We had fun experimenting with different angles and poses, including some floor-level portraits and an upside-down composition that added something a little unexpected.
Elaine also joined Jaycine for a photograph featuring their wonderfully contrasting gothic looks. It’s always fun when two models get together and create something you hadn’t originally planned!
Jaycine: Straight Out of a Gothic Fantasy
Jaycine certainly didn’t hold back when it came to Halloween!
With her striking red-and-black hair, elaborate outfits, intricate accessories, and impressive bat wings, she looked like she’d stepped straight out of a dark fantasy movie.
We photographed two different looks, each bringing its own personality to the session.
The bat wings were particularly fun to work with. They created an incredible silhouette against the red backdrop and made for some dramatic full-length portraits.
Add in a few fierce expressions and an ornate dagger prop, and we had plenty of Halloween drama!
Emily: Gothic Glamour Meets Little Shop of Horrors
Emily brought an incredible range of creativity to the studio, starting with two dark, elegant outfits that were perfect for our Halloween theme.
One of my favourite ideas involved using a large piece of black lace as a flowing veil.
Of course, getting fabric to float dramatically through the air while someone stands perfectly still is easier said than done!
Thankfully, Emily’s mom, Jenn, and my lovely wife, Melissa, were there to help. With some carefully timed veil tossing, we managed to capture some wonderful movement in the photographs.
It was a real team effort and a lot of fun!
Then Emily brought out something completely different.
Inspired by Little Shop of Horrors, she had created her very own Venus flytrap costume, complete with enormous teeth, glittering details, and trailing greenery.
And yes, she made it herself!
The costume was absolutely incredible. The bright greens and pinks against the red backdrop gave us a completely different colour combination from the darker gothic photographs.
It was quirky, imaginative, and wonderfully over the top. Exactly what Halloween should be!
Lina: Bringing Dance and Movement to the Studio
Our final model of the evening was Lina, who brought something a little different to the session.
Originally from Colombia, Lina loves dance and movement, and rather than concentrating on traditional Halloween costumes, we decided to explore that side of her personality.
With flowing black outfits, expressive poses, and some fun purple-striped accessories, we created a series of portraits that leaned more toward fashion and movement than gothic horror.
I particularly enjoyed photographing Lina as she experimented with different shapes and poses.
There’s something wonderful about working with someone who enjoys movement. Rather than holding a pose, the session becomes more fluid, with little moments and expressions appearing naturally.
It was a lovely way to finish the evening.
One Backdrop, So Many Possibilities
Looking back at the photographs, what strikes me most is just how much variety we managed to create with a single red backdrop.
We went from gothic horror to dark fantasy, elegant fashion portraits, a giant Venus flytrap, and dance-inspired photography, all in the same studio!
That’s one of the things I love most about creative portrait photography. You don’t necessarily need elaborate sets or complicated equipment to create interesting images.
Sometimes all you need is a simple idea, some good lighting, and people who are willing to get creative.
A huge thank you to Syd, Elaine, Jaycine, Emily, and Lina for bringing so much enthusiasm and personality to the shoot.
And a special thanks to Jenn and Melissa for their help behind the scenes. Those flying veil photographs certainly wouldn’t have happened without them!
