I was invited to photograph the SOLSTICE Summer Fashion Show, presented by the UVic Fashion Society at Ambrosia Banquet & Events in Victoria, and it turned into such a great evening.
From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere felt welcoming. Emmy, one of the organizers, was lovely and incredibly supportive of the photographers covering the event. That kind of energy makes a difference, especially at a fashion show where there is so much happening at once.
The crowd came dressed for the occasion, which made the reception almost as much fun to photograph as the runway itself. There were great looks everywhere, plenty of personality, live music, local art and, importantly, a very good matcha to keep me going.
The runway was divided into two parts, moving from the lighter summer feeling of FULL SUN into the darker, moodier ECLIPSE. The designs were fabulous, and it was especially fun for me to recognize a few of the designers from my time teaching Fashion Photography at Pacific Design Academy. Seeing their work come down the runway was a pretty great full-circle moment.
From a photography perspective, fashion shows are always an interesting challenge. You are working with constantly changing light, movement, expressions and timing, while trying to capture both the clothing and the personality of the person wearing it. I shot a lot throughout the evening, from runway moments to candid photographs of the crowd and the overall atmosphere.
The entertainment added another layer to the night. DJ Bliss was amazing, the live band was a lot of fun, and the whole event had a creative, community-focused energy from beginning to end.
