An Evening of Art, Impact… and a Couple of Future Heroes 🐾

April 20, 2026

Timothy West

I recently had the pleasure of photographing both the morning events and the evening gala for the CNIB here in Victoria… and honestly, this was one of those assignments that stays with you.

From the moment I arrived, there was a real sense of purpose in the room. This wasn’t just another event… it felt like something that genuinely mattered.

The 26th Eye Appeal Art Gala – Where Creativity Meets Real Impact

Held at the beautiful Delta Hotels Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort, the CNIB Eye Appeal Art Gala & Artists’ Reception 2026 brought together artists, collectors, and a generous, community-driven crowd.

The atmosphere struck that perfect balance… elegant but relaxed, polished but welcoming.

Guests enjoyed incredible artwork, great food, and a lively social energy that built throughout the evening… especially once the auction began.

I’ve photographed a lot of events, and I’ll say it straight… a great auctioneer can make or break a fundraiser.

This one absolutely made it.

Engaging, funny, quick on their feet… and they knew exactly how to read the room. You could feel people getting pulled into the moment, not just watching but actively participating.

And the result?

👉 Over $300,000 raised in one night.

That’s not just impressive… that’s impactful.

What That Actually Means

Here’s the part that really stuck with me…

It costs roughly $55,000 to raise and train a guide dog.

So that night’s fundraising effort?

👉 That’s about 6 guide dogs funded.

These aren’t just animals… they represent independence, confidence, and freedom for someone living with vision loss.

Seeing that connection firsthand changes how you view the entire event.

A Couple of Very Special Labradors 🐕

I also had the chance to photograph two Labradors who were in training to become guide dogs (often called seeing eye dogs).

Calm, focused, and incredibly well-behaved… even in a busy event environment.

Knowing what they’re being trained for adds a whole new level of meaning. You’re not just photographing a dog… you’re capturing part of someone’s future independence.

A Community That Truly Shows Up

One thing that stood out throughout the day and evening was the people.

Everyone I interacted with… from organizers to guests… was welcoming, kind, and genuinely engaged in the cause.

That kind of energy doesn’t happen by accident. It’s what makes events like this successful.

Looking Ahead

I’m grateful to have been part of this event and to document such an important evening.

It’s always great to capture beautiful moments… but it’s even better when those moments are tied to something bigger.

I’m definitely looking forward to photographing more events with CNIB in the future.

Final Thought

Sometimes photography is about lighting, composition, and timing.

And sometimes… it’s about capturing something that actually matters.

This was one of those nights.
